I am currently a PhD Candidate in English at La Trobe University in Melbourne, Australia. My topic is still not set in stone, as I only began my candidature in February 2017 and am studying part time, but the final submission will comprise a historical novel and an accompanying critical component.
My novel has the working title A Bend in the Yarra and is set in 1890s Melbourne. It focuses on the committal of a young woman to a lunatic asylum and the community she finds within its walls.
My critical component is tentatively titled “Getting Out: Female Agency in Discharge from Victorian Asylums, 1880-1910” and will examine the ways in which women were able to influence the discharge process from lunatic asylums despite the limitations of their restricted economic and social power.
